Jesse Nelson VanDen Broek is not a designer who simply creates objects. He gives materials a new identity. In his hands, wood, steel, copper, brass and other natural materials become furniture, lighting and autonomous works of art with their own presence and character.
Born in Yaoundé, Cameroon, in 1988, Jesse spent part of his childhood surrounded by the powerful colours, structures and contrasts of the African landscape. This early connection with nature remains an important source of inspiration. After studying Industrial Product Design at Windesheim University of Applied Sciences in Zwolle, he founded VanDen Collection: a Dutch eco-luxury label built around craftsmanship, sustainable materials and timeless quality. His designs are restrained without becoming anonymous, sculptural without losing their function, and luxurious without relying on excess. Every line, joint and surface is considered. Jesse works closely with craftsmen, but also remains a maker himself: drawing, prototyping, welding, sewing and experimenting with materials until an idea has acquired its definitive form.
Limited by nature
Jesse does not force materials into a predetermined design. Instead, he studies their natural structure, history and imperfections. Weathering, patination and the interaction between nature and material are often allowed to become part of the work. This makes every object subtly different and sometimes truly unique.
His work moves freely between furniture design and autonomous art. Pieces such as Glow, Golden Ratio, Rock and the sculptural Utopa show how he transforms functional objects into expressive works with an almost architectural presence. Classics for tomorrow
Through VanDen Collection, Jesse has presented his work several times during Dutch Design Week and at Masters of LXRY. His combination of natural materials, Dutch craftsmanship and understated forms has also attracted attention within the Dutch design world.
