Lighting historic music machines
For the new interactive exhibition Music Machines & Me at Museum Speelklok in Utrecht, YourSenses contributed to the lighting of several display vitrines presenting historical mechanical music machines.
The exhibition invites visitors to explore how music and mechanics come together. Inspired by centuries-old instruments such as music boxes, barrel organs, and automated instruments, visitors can experiment and build their own music machines.
The historical objects on display require precise and carefully controlled lighting. Many of these instruments contain delicate materials and intricate mechanisms that must be presented clearly while respecting museum conservation standards.
Precision lighting for museum vitrines
To illuminate the objects, GYO miniature spotlights were installed inside several display cases.

Each object requires its own lighting balance. The individually adjustable intensity allows curators to set the exact level needed to reveal textures, materials, and mechanical structures without overexposing sensitive objects.
Revealing the mechanics of music
Mechanical music instruments are fascinating objects. Gears, cylinders, pins, and springs form the “programming” that creates melodies.
The lighting design focuses on revealing these mechanical details so visitors can better understand how these remarkable machines work.
Subtle highlights on metal parts, warm reflections on wood, and controlled shadows help emphasize the craftsmanship and complexity of these historical instruments.
About the exhibition
Music Machines & Me transforms the first floor of the museum into a creative space where visitors become makers themselves. Through interactive installations and experiments, they discover how music can be generated through mechanical systems.
The exhibition demonstrates that technology can be both functional and playful — especially when music becomes the reward.
